Absidia / Six Reasons To Kill - Morphology of Fear SPLIT LP
Bastardized Recordings - - 12inch
Here's a double dosage of punishing German metal, featuring four tracks each by two excellent bands. Six Reasons to Kill are up first, with their crushing metalcore sound that takes no prisoners and just beats your ass relentlessly. SRTK have a lot more going for them than your standard issue Swedish death inspired metalcore sound that you can't seem to shake these days. These guys are much more entrenched in death/grind territory with their ever-changing vocal delivery that ranges from a guttural growl to a high-pitched scream that just totally decimates the listener. There's some grind sounding parts to the music along with the more traditional breakdowns and even some precision death metal riffing that keeps you on your toes over the course of their four songs. This is some really solid stuff and I hope to hear more from these guys in the future. Absidia make up the second half of this disc and open things, with a beautiful piano instrumental. Their remaining three tracks kick into a powerful combination of At the Gates style melodic thrash with some quiet acoustic moments that remind me of older In Flames records. The guitar work possesses the Swedish death metal flair but the melodies and riffs are far above average and the overall sound is a bit more rugged and dirty, than most bands of this ilk. They also are good at incorporating some moody acoustic guitars from time to time that really give their sound an extra edge. Vocally they employ a harsh sneer, in the vein of Tomas Lindberg's work with ATG and it works well with what they've got going on. Overall, this is a damn fine split that introduces us to two great bands that are well worth checking out. Sadly, Absidia are no more but they left us with a great contribution on this split and Six Reasons to Kill show great promise with these tunes. All an all, an A+ split with some killer artwork. Against Me! - As The Eternal Cowboy
Fat Wreck Chords - - 12inch
Fat was lucky enough to grab these guys for their second full length As The Eternal Cowboy, where the band fuses influences of blues, folk, and American Rock together with a unique punk sound all their own. From the demos alone we knew that we had something momentous on our hands. To make sure that the final product would stand up, the boys headed off to Ardent studios in Memphis, TN (ZZ Top, Led Zeppelin, etc.). Against Me! As The Eternal Cowboy will bring praise from the legions of fans the band already has, and will certainly move new listeners to join the party!
